Scottish Metrical Psalms sung a cappella
The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland is a Psalm singing church, which practices exclusive psalmody, with Psalms sung a cappella, in accordance with the Regulative Principle of Worship. We believe that God has appointed the 150 Psalms of David in the Bible as the only songs for public worship. Accordingly we sing the Psalms in public worship and do not use hymns or other songs of human composition.
Below you will find recordings of Scottish Metrical Psalms sung a cappella, using the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650. The Westminster Assembly reviewed this Psalter and the Church of Scotland adopted and sanctioned it for use in worship in 1649. The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland retains this version rather than recent versions, which attempt to modernise it.
Psalm singing in the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland is exclusively vocal, led by a precenter in unaccompanied praise to God.
Free Church in Ontario
The Free Church of Scotland in Ontario practiced exclusive psalmody until the unions of 1861 and 1875. Following these unions, the united churches introduced hymns and musical instruments. Since the early 20th Century, the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland in Canada has maintained the same historic, biblical exclusive psalmody witness of the original Free Church of Scotland in Ontario.
