The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, both parents and Sabbath Schools, teaches the Shorter Catechism to children from an early age. Learning the sound doctrine of the shorter catechism establishes their understanding of the fundamental truths of the Reformed Religion, such as the Fall of Man, Effectual Calling, Justification by Faith, and Sanctification. It also defends them against the many false and Arminian beliefs prevalent in our time.

Parents and Sabbath Schools within the Church teach children the Shorter Catechism each week, and some go on to learn the Larger Catechism. Very young children are taught the Mother’s Catechism by John Willison.
Moreover, in accordance with the practice of the Reformation Church of Scotland, those admitted for receiving receiving Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, are required to demonstrate their knowledge of the shorter Catechism.
