Communion Sermons

The Scottish Presbyterian Communion Season is a solemn event. There are first the Preparation services, including the Fellowship Meeting. It culminates on the Sabbath day, with the Communion Sermon, Fencing of the Table, and remembering of the Lord’s Supper.

It begins with a Thursday Fast Day, or Day of Confession of Sin, or Humiliation (Fast is often from worldly distractions rather than from food). The ministers preach sermons from appropriate passages of scripture, both morning and evening.

Friday is the Day of Self Examination. There is a morning service, known as the Fellowship Meeting, or Question Meeting. The basis for discussion is a suitable passage of Scripture. A man rises and proposes a passage. A minister opens the question with an exposition of the passage, after which he calls on the other men to speak based on their personal experiences. The men give Marks of both the Lord’s People and Hypocrites. At the end, a minister summarises what the men have spoken, and closes the question.

A minister preaches the evening service on Friday, based on an appropriate passage of Scripture.

Saturday is the Day of Preparation. After the morning service, the minister gives tokens to intending Communicants. The Kirk Session grants an opportunity to those belonging to the congregation who wish to sit at the Lord’s Table for the first time. There is a Prayer Meeting on Saturday evening, usually without the ministers present. 

Solemn Day

The Sabbath morning sermon is know as the Action Sermon, with the text chosen relating to the death of Christ. The more solemn part follows. First there is the Fencing of the Table, in which the Minister debaurs those unworthy to participate, and invites those who are worthy. Accompanied by two psalm singings, the Elders place the elements on the table, then the Communicants take their places at the Lord’s Table.

There is a Thanksgiving Service on Monday.
